Born in Tokyo, Seishi Ono is an engineering researcher and entrepreneur dedicated to widening access to knowledge through technology. He earned a B.A. in Economics from Musashi University and an MBA in Management Systems Science from the University of Tsukuba.

After holding various technical and managerial posts, he now serves as President of EdTec Japan LLC, Vice-Chair of the NPO Consortium TIES, which designs and operates online learning platforms, and CyberMate LLC. This organization advances open access to scholarly information by bridging open science practices with data science tools.

Ono’s primary passion today is large-scale online learning. He witnessed the late-1990s e-learning boom and the 2013 rise of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)—two waves that briefly seemed poised to overhaul schooling yet ultimately left the centuries-old system largely intact. He now focuses on fostering a third wave that can transform education through decentralized platforms, blockchain-secured credentials, and data-driven learning communities.

Mr Ono originally set out to pursue academic economics research, focusing on the Uno Theory. Although professional demands ultimately led him down a different path, he hopes to publish his early ideas when time permits.

Away from work, he follows a slow-life, slow-work ethos. He relishes the strategy of shogi (Japanese chess) and never misses an opportunity to enjoy delicate sashimi or sushi. Age may advance, but his curiosity and appetite remain undiminished—and he is always eager to connect with friends and colleagues around the globe.
